New York Capital Region Nonprofits: A Major Economic EngineThe nonprofit sector is a huge driving force in the Capital Region! The Community Foundation is happy to have joined our friends at the New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc., The Schenectady Foundation, Capital Region Chamber, and MVP Health Care to sponsor this eye-opening study from Johns Hopkins University: “New York Capital Region Nonprofits: A Major Economic Engine.”

Among the findings in the report:

  • The Capital Region’s charitable nonprofit workforce comprises 79,210 persons
  • The associated state income tax payments made by those workers is $125 million
  • The sector mitigated the impact of the 2007-2009 recession on the region. From 2003 to 2013,nonprofits accounted for more than 90% of new jobs created in the Capital Region.
