OUR MISSION

The mission of The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region is to strengthen our community by attracting charitable endowments both large and small, maximizing benefits to donors, making effective grants, and providing leadership to address community needs.

Understanding the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region

For 42 years, The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region has worked to improve the quality of life in the region by promoting and facilitating effective philanthropy.  Our success is directly related to our generous donors who invest through the Community Foundation in our area’s most effective not-for-profit organizations.

We provide:
• High-impact, flexible giving opportunities for donors
• Major funding for not-for-profits and scholarship for students
• Leadership around key community issues

Impact
The Community Foundation awards nearly $3 million each year to more than 700 not-for-profit organizations in the Capital Region and across the country.  Since inception, we have invested nearly $36 million in our communities through grant and scholarship funding.  Our grant funding achieves meaningful, measurable results and leverages significant investments from other foundations, donors, and government sources.

Service
With more than 340 separate charitable funds, the Community Foundation works closely with its donors to achieve their philanthropic goals.  Individuals, families, organizations, and businesses create funds at the Foundation to support their charitable interests, serve as leaders in their communities, and affect change.  We assist donors in making meaningful investments in our community in whatever manner suits them.  Flexibility is our greatest asset.

Information
The Community Foundation commissions fresh research, issues reports, and supports the sharing of best practices and challenges in the not-for-profit sector.  Gatherings around key issues bring people and groups together to find solutions to community challenges.

Assets
The Community Foundation’s assets currently total $51 million.  These charitable assets are professionally managed to safeguard principal and yield a competitive rate of return.  Oversight of endowed assets is provided by a volunteer Investment Committee which includes top financial and investment experts.

Integrity
The Community Foundation is confirmed to be in compliance with the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations, voluntarily adopting policies and procedures to guarantee that we conduct business not only legally, but ethically and according to best practices.

Governance & Staff
The Community Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors, representing diverse backgrounds, interests, and professional expertise. Foundation staff members work closely with donors, grantees, community leaders, government agencies, and businesses to insure the Community Foundation effectively meets community needs.
