The Community Foundation offers a number of scholarships, established by donors to help others realize their dream of an obtaining an education. Most scholarships benefit students from the Capital Region. Unless otherwise noted, scholarships are paid directly to the institution in which the student is enrolled. Enrollment and good academic standing are verified each semester prior to the release of scholarship funds. Award amounts are determined annually, based on the Foundation’s Spending Policy

Eligibility criteria and application procedures for each scholarship will be the same as in 2009; however, due dates and award amounts may differ, and some scholarships may not be awarded every year.

Ad Club Scholarship (up to $3,000): For high school seniors or for students entering their junior or senior year at a Capital Region college or university who are majoring in public communications, marketing, graphic arts, public relations, or any other communications-related curriculum.

Coach Ken Baker Memorial Scholarship (Two awards for $1,000 each): Coach Ken Baker spent nearly 40 years as a teacher and coach at East Greenbush, Hoosick Falls, and Cambridge School Districts, where he brought out the very best in the hundreds of young men and women that he touched.  This scholarship was established to ensure that the legacy of Coach Baker will live on through the awarding of scholarships to deserving high school seniors from both Hoosick Falls and Cambridge schools each year.

BETHLEHEM CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS

Jonathan Albert Scholarship ($500): Established in memory of Jonathan Albert to recognize a student at Bethlehem Central High School whose character exemplifies a strong commitment to a goal or aspiration.  Application can be requested from Bethlehem Central High School Counseling Center or from The Community Foundation.

The Eagle Award of the Ken Neff Scholarship ($4,000): To pay tribute to Ken Neff, Boys Varsity swim coach at Bethlehem Central High School from 1986 to 2000. The scholarship recipient will be a graduating senior of Bethlehem Central High School. Applications are available at Bethlehem Central High School and The Community Foundation.


The Russell Ellers Memorial Scholarship ($1,000): The Russell Ellers Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Bethlehem High School student or students of outstanding character, leadership ability, athletic ability, sense of humor, and a willingness to help others.  These are the same qualities that best describe Russell's character and endeared him to so many during his short life.  Russell Ellers attended the Bethlehem Central School District and was an all-star athlete on the basketball court as well as the baseball field. Off the field, he was equally impressive: an honor student who'd go out of his way to help others.
Special consideration will be given to those who possess the above attributes or qualities and who now face or have faced personal, family or economic hardships or has a high level of financial need.

Captain Timothy J. Moshier Memorial Scholarship ($1,000):  Established to award a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from Bethlehem Central High School.  Applicant must plan to attend a two or four year college or university.  Applicant must have maintained an “A” average for at least three consecutive years in History, English, and/or Applied Sciences.  Applications are available from Bethlehem Central High School and the Community Foundation.


The Will Raub September 11 Bethlehem Central Scholarship Fund ($500): Established by family and friends to provide a scholarship to a graduating senior attending Bethlehem Central High School who has achieved Honor Roll status in at least four quarters. The student must have been a resident of the Town of Bethlehem, have attended BCHS for all four years of high school, have been involved in community service and/or extra-curricular activities, and plan to pursue a degree in Economics, Finance, Business Management or Business Administration at an accredited college or university. Applications are available at the Bethlehem Central Guidance Office and the Community Foundation.

Allison E. Bodnar Memorial Scholarship: Established for the education of a female student of the Alternate Learning Center of the Troy School District who is a graduating senior, plans to attend a two or four year college or university, and has experienced problems but is turning her life around.  For more information, please contact the Troy High School Guidance Office.

John A. Boyd Scholarships (One award for $4,000, one award for $2,000): For graduating seniors at Watervliet High School who have demonstrated scholastic ability and achievement, as well as financial need.  One award will be made to a student who plans to attend a four-year college and one award will be made to a student who plans to attend a two-year college.

Michele Brunette Scholarship Fund ($2,400): For a graduating senior from Troy High School who has demonstrated academic achievement, leadership skills, and evidence of financial need. The recipient must have clear career goals and must be accepted to either a two- or four-year college or university.

Michael J. Campbell Memorial Scholarship ($700): To enable students to attend a two-year New York State private or public college, for the full two years, to earn an Associate’s Degree in Construction Technology, Building Construction/Building Trades or a closely related field. Lela B. Capron Scholarship: Established to assist, broaden, and further the education of a student chosen each year from the Junior Class of Troy High School.  For more information, please contact the Troy High School Guidance Office.

THE CHAMBER OF SCHENECTADY COUNTY SCHOLARSHIPS

Times Union Communications Scholarship ($1,000):  This scholarship is awarded to a student entering a 2 or 4 year college or university to study journalism or a communications-related field.  Student must be a high school senior residing in Schenectady County.  Student must have completed several volunteer activities over the course of their high school career; special consideration given to applicants that have completed projects that focus on literacy-based initiatives with children under age 12.

Doviak Scholarship for the Arts ($500):  This scholarship is awarded to a student entering a 2 or 4 year college or university to study in an arts-related field.  Student must be a high school senior residing in Schenectady County and attending Schenectady High Sayles School of Fine Arts.  Student must have completed several volunteer activities over the course of their high school career; special consideration given to applicants that have completed projects that focus on literacy-based initiatives with children under age 12.

Leonard K. Doviak Memorial Scholarships (two awards each year at $1,000):  These awards are for students entering a 2 or 4 year college or university to study any field.  Students must be high school seniors residing in Schenectady County.  Students must have achieved a high school academic GPA between 75% and 85%.

Trans-Tech - Solid Surface Craftsman Skilled Trades Scholarship ($1,000)

Scholarship will be awarded to a student entering a certificate or apprenticeship program, or a 2 or 4 year college or university to study a skilled trade.  Student must be a high school senior residing in Schenectady County.  Student must qualify for the free or reduced lunch program.

Tina A. Dailey Memorial Scholarship ($1,000): For a graduating Shenendehowa High School senior who has demonstrated academic achievement and an interest in working with children. The student must be accepted to a four-year college or university to pursue a career in elementary education.

C. Michael Darcy Scholarship: To honor Mr. Darcy’s dedication to unionism by benefiting members of PEF Region I, grade 18 or less. The scholarship helps pay tuition not covered by G.O.E.R. vouchers and/or additional higher education expenses. Applications are available from the Region 8 office or The Community Foundation. Scholarships are awarded each spring.

Down Syndrome - Aim High Scholarship ($2,000): To benefit students who will assist those with Down Syndrome by pursuing education and a career in the field of special education or speech, physical, or occupational therapy.

Dunham Hollow Scholarship ($1,800):  To support a resident of the Dunham Hollow-West Stephentown community to attend a trade school.

Don Forsyth “Circle K” Scholarship ($4,500): To provide recognition and financial assistance to individual members of Circle K clubs who have demonstrated exceptional community service.

Warren R. French and Harriet Alene Isenhart French Scholarship: Exclusively for needy students residing within the City of Kankakee, Illinois, who wish to pursue education and/or careers in science (including science teaching), early childhood education (not limited to teaching), and elementary education (not limited to teaching).  For an application, please contact Lyn McIntosh, Scholarship Coordinator, at Kankakee High School at (815) 933-0740.

Ruth Goldstein Memorial Music Scholarship ($500) : For a graduating senior from a Capital Region high school who will continue on to study music education or music performance.  Special consideration will be given to students whose major instrument is of the woodwind family, piano students who accompany others, or students who demonstrate financial need.

Gifford Grange Scholarship: For a Guilderland High School student who plans to pursue an education in agriculture or nursing. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need. The candidate should demonstrate potential for success through extra-curricular school-related or community activities.  Please contact the Guilderland High School Guidance Office for more information.

Gifford Grange Scholarship: For a Schalmont High School student who plans to pursue an education in agriculture or nursing. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need.  For an application please contact Chris Bailey at Schalmont High School at (518) 355-6110.

Glenville Grange John L. Conde Memorial Scholarship: To benefit a graduating senior from the Scotia-Glenville High School who has been accepted at an accredited college or university. Cora A. Hare Scholarship: To enable qualified graduates of Lansingburgh High School to acquire educational advantages that can help them contribute to the advancement of medical knowledge.  For more information, please contact Mark Pascale at Lansingburgh High School.

William Randolph Hearst Scholarship ($6,000): For students who have been accepted into ninth grade at a Capital Region private high school, but would be unable to attend without additional financial assistance.

Susan Hughes Memorial Scholarship for Elementary Education: Awarded to a Shenendehowa High School graduate who will be enrolling in a four year program in New York State to become an elementary school educator.  For more information, please contact the Shenendehowa High School Guidance Office.

The Mike Hurewitz Journalism Scholarship ($700): Established to honor Mike Hurewitz’s love for journalism. This scholarship will be presented annually to a Capital Region graduating high school senior who plans to attend an accredited four-year college or university. The student must have a clearly demonstrated interest in journalism and must demonstrate financial need.

Shirley Kelly Scholarship ($10,000): Established in honor of Mrs. Kelly’s 80th birthday to enable a student from Columbia High School (East Greenbush) to pursue an education and career in elementary education. Clarissa and Harry Mack Ketcham Award:  Established to provide a monetary award to one male and one female, who are graduating seniors of the Vocational Agriculture Department at the Greenville Central High School and have shown personal growth and outstanding achievement in the field of agriculture.  For more information, please contact the Greenville Central High School Guidance Office.

Edna A. Lauterbach Scholarship: Established in memory of Edna A. Lauterbach, RN, former president of Competent Care, Inc. and American Care, Inc., this scholarship is open to nurses in New York State who are seeking to enhance their skills through business-related education. Scholarships are awarded to registered nurses and licensed practical nurses residing in New York State.

Lessels Scholarship of the Albany Branch of the English-Speaking Union:  Enables a student to pursue a course of study and travel in England.  The applicant must be a Troy-Albany area resident between the ages of 25 and 40.  In addition to the Lessels Scholarship application, an application from the program of your choice (e.g. International Shakespeare Globe Centre, University of Oxford, Scottish Universities International Summer School) must also be completed.  Program applications can be accessed at www.esuus.org; scholarship application is available from the Community Foundation.

Herbert K. and Isabel C. Liebich Four-Year Scholarship ($20,000): Established to honor the founders of Albany Frosted Foods, one of the original companies to form Sysco Corporation, by awarding a scholarship each year to the children of employees or retirees of Sysco Foods of New York, Inc.. Applications are available each spring from any of the Sysco Foods of New York, Inc. personnel offices. Awards are paid over four years.

Herbert K. Liebich Two-Year College Scholarship (Two awards for $5,000 each): Established to honor Mr. Liebich’s lifelong work and to recognize his dedication to education, by awarding a scholarship in his name each year to the children of employees or retirees of Sysco Foods of New York, Inc. Niskayuna Community Foundation Scholarship:  Established to provide scholarships for students who reside within the Town of Niskayuna or the Niskayuna Central School District.  The student must have been accepted at or planning to attend an accredited college or university.  Applicants must have a clearly demonstrated commitment to enhancing the quality of life in Niskayuna.  Scholarly achievement will be considered.  For more information, please contact the Niskayuna Community Foundation.

Joseph Patanian Scholarship: Provides support for a graduating senior from Shaker High School who is enrolled in an accredited two or four year college in New York State, in a program leading to a degree in Business Administration, Business Education, Marketing, Accounting, Finance, Office Management or other business-related courses of study. Coach Dan Reinfurt Scholarship: Awarded annually to a Watervliet High School athlete who exemplifies the qualities most admired by Dan Reinfurt in a student-athlete. Applications are available at the Watervliet High School Guidance Office and via the Community Foundation.

Gene Robb Journalism Scholarship ($1,000): Established to recognize the many significant contributions that Gene Robb, former publisher of the Times Union, made to the field of journalism. The student must have a clearly demonstrated interest in journalism and provide samples of journalistic work. Personal recommendations are required.

Lou Rubin and Ike Cohen Memorial Scholarship: Assists outstanding students who plan to pursue post-secondary education in college and vocational programs. Applicants must be dependent children of full-time employees of designated periodical wholesaler organizations, and/or national periodical distributors, and/or publishers in specified areas east of the Mississippi River, with one year of service. Applications are available through the employee’s personnel office or from the Community Foundation.

Lawrence Spraragen Memorial Scholarship ($1,000):  Established in memory of Lawrence Spraragen to provide scholarships for children or grandchildren of current, active members of IBEW Local 236 or the management or staff of a signatory contractor to IBEW 236.

Peg Wagner Art Award:  Established to provide a graduating senior at Johnstown High School with an award to pursue art. The student must have been an active participant in the visual arts program and enjoy the creative outlet of self-expression.
