COMMUNITY FOUNDATION HONORS SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS, DONORS
DURING JULY 13TH CELEBRATION

More than $77,000 awarded to 32 students

ALBANY, NY – The Community Foundation for the Capital Region will honor its 2006 scholarship recipients – and the donors who made those scholarships possible – during a celebration Thursday, July 13, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the foundation office at Six Tower Place.

The foundation awarded more than $77,000 in scholarships this year, helping 32 students realize their dreams for education. Thursday’s reception acknowledges the accomplishments of these students and the generosity of those who established and support the Community Foundation’s scholarship funds.

“This event provides an opportunity for donors to see the impact of their generosity, firsthand,” says Robert G. Dollar, Foundation board member and liaison for scholarships. “Since many of our scholarship funds pay tribute to a loved one, it gives our donors great satisfaction to meet and encourage a student who shares that loved one’s talents or interests. At the same time, scholarship recipients welcome the chance to say ‘thank you’ in person.”

The Community Foundation manages 46 scholarship funds and distributes awards ranging from $300 to $20,000, in accordance with donors’ wishes. As such, the Foundation plays a role in preparing students to take their place in virtually every profession, from business, journalism and education to construction, engineering, art, music and medicine.

THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR THE CAPITAL REGION WINS NATIONAL AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING COMMUNICATIONS

SERGEANT RETURNS TO COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FROM IRAQ

Rebecca Jeffers Burgos earns Bronze Star for Meritorious Service

ALBANY , NY – During her nine months in Iraq, Sgt. 1 st Class Rebecca Jeffers Burgos was immersed in awards, supervising the 42 nd Infantry Division’s program to acknowledge the combat achievements of more than 23,000 of her fellow soldiers.

These days, Burgos has returned home to her job as scholarship coordinator and executive assistant at the Community Foundation for the Capital Region. As such, she oversees awards of a different sort: the scholarships that Community Foundation donors have established to help area students realize their dreams for higher education.

Her time in Tikrit with the New York Army National Guard 42 nd Infantry “Rainbow” Division earned Burgos The Bronze Star Medal for “meritorious service.” It also provided a powerful reminder of why she joined the service in 1989, just eight years after moving to the United States from Trinidad.

“I wanted to find a way to give something back to the country that has been so good to me and my family,” Burgos says. “Dreams are attainable in America in ways that are not possible anywhere else. Sometimes, we lose sight of that.”

As soldier and civilian, Burgos considers it important to make a difference in the lives of those around her. That’s precisely what she does each day at the Community Foundation. In addition to managing Foundation scholarships, Burgos oversees the new Capital Region Common Cents Penny Harvest program, which involves schoolchildren in philanthropy. She also assists with several other community initiatives.

“We are thrilled to have Becky back with us, safe and sound,” says Community Foundation President E. Kristen Frederick. “Along with her skills and enthusiasm, she brings a different perspective, born of her experience not just in Iraq, but also at Ground Zero after 9-11.”

In fact, Burgos says that her time in Iraq and post-9-11 New York City taught her the same lessons: “Don’t take even the simplest thing for granted. And don’t sweat the small stuff – and it’s all small stuff.”

Although hers was not a combat assignment, Burgos experienced her share of danger and discomfort while stationed in Iraq, from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and blinding sandstorms to power outages, and having to share her living quarters with rats and snakes.

Hardest of all was the time away from her husband and children. Her unit was called up in April 2004 and spent eight months training at Fort Drum before being deployed to Iraq. All told, she was gone 20 months – an eternity when you’re raising two teenagers.

Now, however, Burgos is making up for lost time. In addition to working full-time at the Community Foundation, she is finishing up her degree at Siena College, touring colleges with her 17-year-old son, and helping her 16-year-old daughter navigate the tricky terrain of high school.

“It’s wonderful to have a normal schedule,” Burgos says, “and to be able to play an active role in their lives once again.”
